B - Venice and its islands |
In the Venetian Lagoon, there are many islands, which had an important defensive and commercial role in the past. The islands that are still inhabited and can be visited are: • the Lido, which was important for its bathing establishment, but now known worldwide for the Venice International Film Festival • Murano, famous for the precious and unique Murano glass • Burano with its colourful houses that inspired many artists and its handmade laces • Torcello, an island with only 25 inhabitants and a wonderful cathedral. Inside you can admire the impressive mosaic of the Last Judgement • Sant’Erasmo and its lovely gardens • and also Mazzorbo, Le Vignole, Pellestrina, San Clemente, Mazzorbetto. Some other islands are cloisters: • San Francesco del Deserto, an oasis of peace and silence • San Lazzaro degli Armeni, which is well known for its rich picture gallery and its collection of writings • San Michele, which is the cemetery of the city. You can visit it and see that many famous people, like Igor Stravinkij, were buried there • and San Giorgio Maggiore, San Servolo, la Certosa, Lazzaretto Nuovo. The starting point of our tour is the Tronchetto car park. You will take a boat and reach Murano and Burano, when you will have also lunch. Then you will visit Torcello and finally, you will go back to Tronchetto.
